Modernising asset management systems
Led the Asset Register's redesign into Aurora, driving securities module enhancements via a 2-day workshop in Vienna with devs, QA, and product teams. My solutions, validated through client testing, streamlined asset management and improved efficiency.
Problem Statement
Smartstream's Asset Register, a critical tool used by banks and hedge funds, relied on outdated legacy screens. These struggled to display complex assets, increasing the risk of compliance issues and inefficiencies. I used the Aurora launch of the securities module to modernise the experience as the sole designer.
The Challenge: Displaying Diverse Assets
Legacy screens could not support a growing and complex asset list, particularly dual-listed assets with multiple identifiers. A single asset could have several IDs across exchanges, which led to convoluted navigation and inflexible flows, slowing users and increasing friction. These became the core problems the redesign needed to solve.
My Approach: Workshop-Led Alignment
I travelled to Vienna to lead a 2-day UX workshop with developers, QA, documentation, designers, and product managers to define the structure of the securities module. With a tight deadline, I skipped formal research and used the workshop to align on priorities, focusing on usability and clarity over complexity.
My Pivot: Rapid, Practical Design
I explored practical solutions to improve navigation and flexibility:
- Preset tabs (All / Active / Inactive), defaulting to Active where users focus most
- Expandable containers within rows to surface dual listings instantly
- Custom identifier fields, including Swift codes, for real-world asset needs
Using Smartstream's design system, I produced high-fidelity designs that balanced speed of delivery with consistency.
My Validation: Client Feedback
During a design review with product management, I included a client for unscripted testing. They highlighted the need for custom identifier fields, particularly for internal codes and Swift, which I added. This ensured the solution was validated directly by users and supported real business workflows.
Final Design
The final interface streamlined asset tracking and reduced navigation time:
- Preset tabs prioritise Active assets for faster access
- Expandable asset rows clearly show dual listings
- Flexible custom fields, including Swift, support client-specific needs
I delivered a detailed user flow for developers, reducing ambiguity during implementation and strengthening the value of Aurora.
